Bertram Lewis
Bertram Lewis began his art career as a sculptor, translating what he observed, and imagined, into realistic three dimensional work. After 20 years as a sculptor, he was challenged to create the same feeling of depth on a flat surface. He began the second stage of his journey at the Art Students League of New York, where he worked with various media and subjects ranging from still life, figures, portraits, landscapes, and abstraction. Today, much of his work involves impressionism and abstraction. In his “Fractured Figures” series, traditional perspective is replaced with overlapping flat shapes and a “push/pull” use of color to create depth.
