Artist Statement

My work attempts to truthfully document and share my experience of beauty.  In the current work, a camera obscura is used to expose a troubled ideal.  The unique power of the simple, low tech box to incomparably translate and transform the subject, is the basis for this work today.  The remarkable change in it's significance and meaning over time and across cultures, gender, and amongst groups, like the general public and the fine art world has provided a foundation from which my work evolves. ...

Artist Statement

The beauty and simplicity found in nature continues to inspire me.  Memories of places I've been and things that I've seen spark my desire to record my thoughts and feelings in a visual way.  I find my mind often forms it's own images, trying to capture the essence of how I feel in a particular place, and the surprise and elation I experience when encountering something unexpected, unusual or strikingly beautiful.  Although nature is my main source of inspiration, some of my pieces are purely explorations in color.  Others tell stories, reflect my views on life, or enable me to comment on issues that are important to me.  I taught young children for may years, and continue to be inspired by their fresh, direct approach.  In my work I strive to create that same sense of spontaneity. ...

Artist Statement

These paintings are part of a larger spectrum of work.  On large canvases, sinuous figures, bright and luscious colour, and intricate patterns brought me in some ambiguous events.  I focus here, on one hand, on fabrics and their visual and textural value as well as their roles as trade commodities and cultural ambassadors from their varied origins (Scotland, Botswana, Normandy, Brazil, Chile, Norway).  while the figures in my works lack defining features, in each case it is the intricately patterned clothing - and the gestures taking place within them - that distinguish the characters. ...

Artist Statement

I explore the relationship between the ancient and the modern, abstracting line, form and color to create objects of veneration that are at once familiar and alien, reflecting both the primitive age and the machine age.  This series draws inspiration both from the monolithic obelisks of ancient Egypt and the neoteric towers of the contemporary metropolis of New York.
